From 19 January 2026, businesses must comply with these standards. Infant sleep products Infant sleep products have a surface for an infant to lie on. They are designed or marketed for an infant to sleep on or to soothe or settle an infant. Products designed to convert to infant sleep products are considered infant sleep products. Infant sleep products include, but are not limited to: bassinets cradles co-sleepers inclined sleepers household cots portable folding cots. Infant sleep products must comply with the mandatory safety standard and the mandatory information standard. Inclined non-sleep products Inclined non-sleep products are designed or marketed for infants. They have a surface, which may be at an incline, for an infant to lie on. Inclined non-sleep products provide entertainment or a safe place for infants to play. They do not claim to be suitable for infant sleep. Sunscreen is generally recommended for use on babies over 6 months old. So, how much is enough? We love the simple "Two-Finger Rule" for coverage: 👉 Step 1: Two Lines Squeeze two full lines of sunscreen onto two fingers (your index and middle finger), running from the base to the tip of each finger. 🧴 Step 2: Full Coverage That entire amount is roughly what's needed to cover your child's whole body (excluding the face, which needs an extra dab). Hand hygiene isn't just about reducing common germs; it's about mechanical removal, physically washing them down the drain! The Gastro Threat: Why Sanitiser Fails When it comes to highly contagious viruses like Norovirus, hand sanitiser doesn't always work! Most hand sanitisers are alcohol-based and are excellent for killing many bacteria and enveloped viruses (like the flu), but they often fail to deactivate tough, non-enveloped viruses like Norovirus. The only way to effectively remove gastro-causing germs is through proper handwashing with soap and running water. Your 20-Second Clean Routine: Make sure you're washing the right way to be a true Germ Buster! 1. Wet hands with running water. 2. Lather with soap. 3. Scrub for at least 20 seconds (the length of singing "Happy Birthday" twice!). Make sure to scrub the back of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. 4. It’s most common in children under 5 and often starts after a cold. Even the most absorbent nappies should be changed every 2–3 hours. 🌬️ Air Time is Key: Allow your baby's bottom to air dry completely after cleaning and before putting on a new nappy. Lay them on a towel for a few minutes without a nappy at each change. 🧼 Gentle Cleaning: Clean the area gently with water or a mild wipe. Pat the skin dry, don't rub, as rubbing can cause irritation. 🧴 Use a Barrier Cream: Apply a thick layer of a zinc-based barrier cream at every change, especially before bed. While the trick-or-treating fun is exciting, it's also a good time to remember some important safety tips, especially when it comes to those delicious haul of sweets. Here's how to keep your little ghosts and goblins safe this Halloween: Inspect the Haul: Before anyone dives in, always check all treats for signs of tampering, open wrappers, or anything suspicious. When in doubt, throw it out! Opt for individually wrapped items from reputable brands. Choking Hazards: Be mindful of choking risks, especially for younger children. Hard lollies, small round candies, and anything sticky or chewy can be dangerous. Consider setting these aside or cutting larger items into smaller pieces. Allergy Aware: If your child has allergies, this is critical. Carefully read labels on all treats. For unlabelled or homemade items, it's often safest to avoid them. Understanding Seafood Allergies 🦐 With so many delicious prawns and fish on our plates, it's important to be aware of the signs of a seafood allergy. It's one of the most common food allergies in Australia and can cause a severe, life-threatening reaction. A person can be allergic to either fin fish (like salmon or tuna) or shellfish (like prawns, crab, and lobster), or both. For some, the allergy is so sensitive that even being in the same room where seafood is being cooked can trigger a reaction. Symptoms can include: Hives, rash, or swelling Swelling of the lips, face, or tongue Vomiting, stomach cramps, or diarrhoea Difficulty breathing or wheezing A drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness or fainting A severe allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis and is a medical emergency. If you see signs of anaphylaxis, you must act immediately. What to do in an emergency: Administer an adrenaline injector (such as an EpiPen) if the person has one. Call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance immediately. Don't take any chances with allergies. A Critical First Aid Myth Debunked: Can You Swallow Your Tongue During a Seizure? 🧠 It's a terrifying thought and a widespread belief, but here's the truth: A person cannot swallow their tongue during a seizure. It is a complete myth. The tongue is a muscle firmly anchored to the floor of the mouth, making it physically impossible to be swallowed. So, what's the real danger? During a seizure, the person’s muscles become rigid and then relax. In this process, the tongue can fall to the back of the throat and obstruct the airway. This is not the same as swallowing it, but it does pose a risk. What should you do if someone is having a seizure? Knowing the correct first aid is vital. Remember these key steps: Stay Calm and Time the Seizure: Note when the seizure starts and ends. Most seizures stop on their own within a few minutes. Protect Them: Gently guide them away from any dangerous objects like furniture, stairs, or sharp corners. Don't Restrain Them: Never try to hold them down or stop their movements. Do NOT Put Anything in Their Mouth: This is the most important rule! Putting an object in their mouth can cause serious injury to their teeth, jaw, and even injure you. Gastroenteritis (gastro) is an infection of the stomach and bowel that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. While it's usually caused by a virus and gets better on its own, the biggest danger for little ones is dehydration. Here's what you need to know: Hydration is Key: Offer small, frequent sips of fluid. Oral rehydration solutions (like Hydralyte) are best as they replace lost salts and sugars. Avoid sugary drinks and fruit juice, as they can make diarrhoea worse. Look for Signs of Dehydration: Fewer wet nappies, dry lips and mouth, no tears when crying, and sunken eyes are all red flags. Hygiene, Hygiene, Hygiene! Gastro is super contagious. Wash your and your child's hands thoroughly with soap and water after every nappy change and before preparing food. When to see a doctor immediately: Your baby is under 6 months old. You see signs of dehydration. They have a high fever. They can't keep any fluids down. It’s a common bit of folk wisdom that has been passed down for generations, but it’s a dangerous myth that could make an injury much worse. Where does this myth come from? The idea of using butter, or other fatty substances like oil or lard, on a burn dates back centuries. People believed that the fat would soothe the skin and "draw out" the heat. They didn't understand the science of burns, which is that the damage continues even after the heat source is removed. So, what's the truth? Putting butter or any other fatty substance on a burn is a big no-no. Not only does it do absolutely nothing to cool the burn, but it can actually trap the heat in the skin, causing more damage. The fat can also be difficult to clean off and may increase the risk of infection. The correct first aid for a burn is simple: Cool it! Remove any clothing or jewellery from the burned area unless it's stuck to the skin. Cool the burn under cool running water for at least 20 minutes. This is the most important step! Cover the burn with a clean, non-stick dressing (like a plastic wrap or a non-fluffy cloth). Seek medical advice if the burn is larger than a 20-cent coin, on a sensitive area like the face, or if you are at all concerned. A critical safety warning for parents and carers ⚠️ Those small, high-powered magnetic balls you see in toys, sets, and even as fake jewellery are extremely dangerous if swallowed. A stark reminder of this danger was highlighted in an article in the Townsville Bulletin back in 2020, showing just how devastating the impact can be. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has banned the sale of these high-powered magnets for good reason. If a child swallows more than one, the magnets can attract each other through the walls of their intestines or other parts of their digestive system. This can cause: Intestinal blockages Tearing or piercing of the bowel Severe infection and internal bleeding The need for emergency surgery, which can be life-threatening and have long-term health consequences. The danger isn't just for young children. Teenagers have been hospitalised after using these magnets to mimic tongue or lip piercings and accidentally swallowing them. What to do if you have these magnets at home: Get rid of them immediately. Check toys purchased online or from overseas, as they may not meet Australian safety standards. If you suspect a child has swallowed a magnet, even if they have no symptoms, seek urgent medical attention. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
